Dan Berrigan Center for Art and Activism

Dan Berrigan, SJ
Daniel Berrigan was a poet, activist, and Jesuit priest committed to solidarity with the oppressed and a radical resistance to all manner of state war-making and violence. As an artist, Dan inspired millions with his words calling for justice. As an activist, he put his body on the line for what he believed in, “a peaceable kin-dom.” Throughout his life, Dan shared his joyful witness with others during demonstrations, in the classroom, living in community with lay-people and his Jesuit brothers in New York, and while quietly attended to the sick and dying during the HIV/Aids epidemic.

The Center
On April 7, 2017, the family and friends of the priest, poet, and activist Dan Berrigan, SJ, hosted the grand opening of the Daniel Berrigan Center for Art and Activism (DBC) at Benincasa Commuity (then in Manhattan). The Center is dedicated to following the example of Prayerfulness, Nonviolent Resistance, Healing Hands, and Community exemplified by Dan and others who remain committed to movements for peace and collective liberation in our world. Since its founding, the DBC has hosted students, activists, and artists including The Peace Poets, COSECHA, IfNotNow, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, the Alliance for Fair Food, and many others.

Visit
The Daniel Berrigan Center offers limited accommodations and retreat/work space for individuals and groups such as, college students on alternative break trips and organizers planning campaigns in their communities. The barn at Fisher’s Nook has been converted to include a working kitchen, bathrooms, and lodging for 7-10 individuals. Weather permitting, additional guests are invited to camp in tents outside near the common area. Amenities for the DBC are designed for simplicity and limited environmental impact (composting toilets, wood-burning stoves, restricted electric use, etc.). Please contact us for more information about these facilities.
